At least 11 people were killed in a booby-trapped car explosion that rocked Syria's northern rebel-held Afrin city, Sputnik news agency quoted activists as saying Thursday.

According to sources with the Free Syrian Army that controls the city of Afrin, the blast occurred near the Turanda highway, killing 11 people, including children, and injuring others.

Police have reportedly blamed militants from the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) for the incident.
